What is family insurance?
A minor slip up or a moment of inattention can have major financial consequences. You could accidentally run into a cyclist who falls and is badly injured or someone could spill coffee over your laptop but refuses to pay for the damage. Family insurance protects you from such unexpected costs, regardless of whether you caused the harm or suffered it.
What is and isn’t covered?
Covered
- Loss, damage or injury caused to other individuals
We will compensate the person who suffered the loss, damage or injury. The policy also covers any loss, damage or injury caused by your animals to other individuals. - Loss, damage or injury caused by the actions of another person
If you take out personal legal assistance insurance, we’ll help you get compensation from the liable party. If they are unable to pay, we’ll pay up to 12 500 euros in compensation. This figure is doubled in the case of bodily injuries.
Not covered
- Loss, damage or injury which you cause to yourself or family members
- Loss, damage or injury resulting from gross negligence on the part of a member of your family aged 18 or older
- Loss, damage or injury caused intentionally by a member of your family aged 16 or older
- Loss, damage or injury caused by your riding horses or by animals that you, as a private individual residing in Belgium, are not allowed to keep
- Fines and out-of-court settlements
- Disputes in which you are involved as the owner or driver of a motor vehicle that is subject to compulsory motor insurance
Compensation and deductible
- For bodily injuries, we provide cover of up to 30 million euros per claim event and there's no deductible to pay.
- We provide cover of up to 10 million euros for material damage and you pay a deductible of 250 euros per claim event.
Additional family insurance information
Family insurance isn't obligatory, yet nearly every Belgian household has it. You really can't do without it, even if you're single or you don't have any children. A minor accident can sometimes have serious consequences.
Say the worst happened and someone ended up permanently disabled. If you are deemed responsible for the accident, you could be paying for the rest of your life. KBC Family Insurance covers you in such situations for a relatively low premium.
Whether you're living on your own or together with friends, are single or have young children, family insurance is absolutely essential in all households. And if you've gone through a divorce, it's worthwhile reviewing your existing family insurance policy too.
Our family insurance also includes separate cover for people who live under the same roof but are not a family unit. One person takes out the insurance and all the others living there are automatically covered by the same policy. Even if you accidentally damage something that belongs to another resident, you are insured (however, the cost of damage caused to contents used by everyone is not).
What happens if someone moves out?
- If one of the residents moves out, he or she is no longer covered
- If the policyholder moves out, the other residents are no longer covered
- New residents are automatically covered (up to five adults)
The five most common incidents prompting claims among KBC customers are listed below along with their estimated cost.
- A water leak in your bathroom causes damage in a neighbouring property
- Possible consequences: Plastering and painting
- Estimated cost: 700 euros to 2,500 euros
- While riding your bike or kick scooter you hit a pedestrian and cause permanent injury
- Possible consequences: Lifelong care
- Estimated cost: +1 million euros
- You accidentally scratch the door of a car with your bike
- Possible consequences: Repair or replacement of the car door
- Estimated cost: 700 euros to 1,500 euros
- A tree falls the wrong way causing damage to your neighbour's property
- Possible consequences: Repair or replacement of fence and furniture
- Estimated cost: 1,700 euros to 10,000 euros
- You accidentally damage the front door of an apartment block when helping a friend to move
- Possible consequences: Repair or replacement of the front door
- Estimated cost: 1,000 euros to 5,000 euros
These three forms of insurance cover are particularly useful if you’re ever involved in an accident. However, there are also important differences. Find out how and when you are covered by these policies.

- Veterinary treatment by a veterinarian from the partner network needed as a result of an injury or non-chronic illness of the insured pet

- The additional cost of certain veterinary treatments recommended or prescribed by the vet, such as acupuncture, homeopathy and hydrotherapy
Depending on the insurance policy chosen, the following forms of cover are included:

Expenses knowingly incurred in order to find a lost or stolen pet, such as advertising costs and reward money.
Death cover
If the insured pet dies or the vet decides that the insured pet should be put down as a result of an illness or injury due to any cause whatsoever as it was inhumane to keep the pet alive since the injury or illness could not have been treated effectively.
Not covered

Compensation and deductible
The sums insured per insured event and the compensation limit applicable per insurance year for all insured events combined may differ depending on the insurance policy chosen and are specified in the membership document.
In case of loss or theft of the insured pet, you will receive compensation in the amount of a) the purchase value of the pet; or b) the standard market value if you are unable to submit proof of purchase of the insured pet.
Only the cover for pets’ injuries and illnesses involves a deductible, which is 10% of the costs eligible for reimbursement, subject to a minimum of 40 euros per insured event.
